Air travel can be drying AF. Sitting on a plane for 2 hours can make you feel like you’ve been in the desert for months. After a 16 hour flight (like my flight to Thailand) and 35 hours of traveling in total, I felt like I was just going to shrivel up and pass out. Why does this happen? The humidity level in the cabins of most commercial airlines is just 10 – 20%. The Sahara Desert isn’t even that dry guys (it’s 25%)! On top of drinking as much water as you can, bringing a great moisturizer onboard is just as important.
So, I’ve been on a mission to find the best moisturizers to bring while I’m up in the air. I’ve become obsessed with being #organic lately and living without all the harmful chemicals that have become the norm here in the USA. I’ve been trying to use the most natural products on my skin and this was a requirement during my search. The products also had to be available in a size that’s under 3.4 ounces to comply with TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. I’ve done some digging and finally found the best of the best. So, here are my 5 favorite natural carryon moisturizers for air travel.
The 5 Best Natural Carryon Moisturizers:
Sumbody is an amazing line of skin care that provides their customers with all-natural, earth-friendly, pure products that strive to deliver fantastic results. Each product is handmade using organic & locally sourced ingredients from renewable or sustainably harvested sources. They never use parabens, petroleum products, animal oils, sodium laurel/laureth sulfates, or artificial preservatives. They were actually making organic products before everybody hopped on the organic train. Deborah Burns, CEO of Sumbody, believes that the earth is our greatest resource and treats each product as a work of art that marries science, nature, and proven results. You may think you’ve tried everything on earth, until you’ve actually tried the earth itself! And that’s what Sumbody delivers.
Product: Detox Moisturizer
Their Detox Moisturizer is the perfect carry on companion for your parched face during long trips. It’s an oil so you know it brings ALL the moisture. It’s formulated with Jojoba Oil, St. John’s Wort, and Carrot Seed Oil to moisturize your skin without leaving it feeling greasy and gross. It purifies and cleans clogged pores as well. Simply squeeze a few drops in the palm of your hand (a little goes a long way) and give yourself a little face massage in your seat using slow, circular motions. It’s so simple, you can do this in turbulence and not lose a drop.
Guys, this stuff is AMAZING. I’ve really gotten into the whole cleansing & moisturizing with oil trend lately to combat my
adult acne occasional dainty breakout, so I’ve tried a few different moisturizing oils. Some of them have been too thick and made me feel gross and some have made me break out even more. This one makes my skin feel as smooth as a baby’s butt and is so light on my face it doesn’t even feel like it’s on. I’ve started using it as my everyday moisturizer and it somehow also combats the intense Miami humidity and keeps the oil at bay. Add oil to get rid of the oily face syndrome? Who would’ve known?! It’s perfect for any weather but especially super dry airplane air. It costs $47 for 1 fl oz.
2. Skyline Dairy
Skyline Dairy is one of the most unique natural brands I’ve ever come across. They are a farm-based apothecary line from Western North Carolina. They manage a small herd of Alpine and Nubian (super cute) goats on the property that provide the milk for their skincare products. Each and every little goat is treated as a family member and given a natural lifestyle with plenty of native and chemical free plants and trees to munch on. (You can check them out, chilling on the farm, in their Insta-Stories!) Their products don’t contain any dyes, synthetic fragrances, or harsh chemicals.
Product: Soothe Moisturizing Cream
My favorite is their line of Moisturizing Creams that are made with 40% raw goat’s milk (from their own adorable herd of course), 5% raw shea butter and safflower oil and then blended with different combinations of their 100% pure and locally-sourced essential oils. These creams protect and moisturize your skin naturally. The blends include Calm, Stress Relief, Soothe, Awake, Cleanse and Focus. I received their Soothe Moisturizing Cream which is an anti-inflammatory blend made of Birch, Camphor, Eucalyptus, and Peppermint. It has a fantastic, super refreshing minty aroma which is great for respiratory health. Their creams also protect and strengthen the skin while fighting free radicals and aiding in natural reparative processes. This helps reduce wrinkles and general signs of aging. Who doesn’t love anti-aging benefits, right?
It’s such a smooth, lovely formula and it’s so easy to rub into your skin. It also absorbs pretty quickly and it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy on your skin so it’s perfect for both your face and body. I have a ton of allergies and occasional asthma so it’s great to just breathe in the minty smell and relax while I’m putting it on my face. Because it’s so cooling and calming, it is perfect for winding down during a long flight so you can sleep comfortably (or as comfortable as you can on a plane). It also works great for soothing worked or sore muscles. This would be a great cream to use as a foot massage at the end of a long day of travel and sightseeing. My mom actually stole this from me because she loves it so much for her constantly dry hands. Their Travel Size is 2.2 fl oz and costs only $9.99. Plus, use the code Summer20 to get 20% off all creams until August 1st, 2017.
I received a whole line of SheaMoisture products complimentary from Influenster and absolutely fell in love with the lotions. This brand has a long history that stretches back to 1912 when the founder, Sofi Tucker, started creating and selling Shea Butter and African Black Soap all over the countryside. The family kept the legacy going and the brand is still strong to this day! I’m sure you’ve even seen this brand all over the shelves at Walmart, Walgreens, or CVS. They are devoted to creating products without all the harmful ingredients including parabens, mineral oil, formaldehyde, phthalates, DEA, propylene, paraffin, and petroleum. Each and every product is natural, organic, sustainably-produced goodness, just like the good old days.
Product: 100% Coconut Oil & Organic Shea Butter All Over Hydration Hand & Body Lotion
Their 100% Coconut Oil & Organic Shea Butter All Over Hydration Hand & Body Lotion is DEEPLY hydrating. It’s made with Certified Organic Shea Butter which is ethically sourced from women’s cooperatives in Northern Ghana. It moisturizes with vitamins and essential fatty acids to give you that deep moisture. Their 100% Coconut Oil blends with Murumuru Butter to replenish the skin with vitamins A, C, E, proteins, and Omega 3, 6, & 9.
It’s absolutely perfect for dry hands and delivers such an intense hydration, you won’t need to reapply at all during your flight. Also, the smell is incredible! You’ll forget you’re on a plane and imagine you’re relaxing on the beach in Fiji. I love to use this one on my hands which are usually the most dry when I’m flying. Their travel size if 2 fl oz and costs $3.99.
4. Eu’Genia Shea
Eu’Genia Shea is truly a product made from love. After her mom was diagnosed with cancer, Naa-Sakle decided to start this company with her mom’s help. She realized life was too short not to spend as many days as possible together. Her mom had the secret recipe to her Grandma Sunshine’s raw, unrefined Ghanaian shea butter. They decided to utilize this beautiful, natural shea butter recipe within their products to provide the best of the best in the shea butter business. Eu’Genia Shea is dedicated to making everything all natural and keeping the concentration and quality of their shea butters high so their customers can get all the benefits of Nature’s Wonderbalm (seriously this stuff is magical). They are also passionate about providing fair wages and opportunities for their female workers in Ghana and donate 15% of their profits back to them in the form of an education fund.
Product: Everyday Shea Butter
They have Pregnancy Strength Shea Butter which contains increased shea butter content to help fight stretch marks, and Dermatological Strength Shea Butter which is 100% pure and used for the driest skin and more serious issues. My favorite is their Everyday Shea Butter. This product was exquisitely designed to combine the beneficial qualities of raw shea butter with the ease that comes with using traditional body creams. It comes in a no added fragrance option, a grapefruit essential oil, and a lavender essential oil.
They’re all amazing but my personal favorite scent is the lavender. It’s smells amazing and works WONDERS on my driest areas (it is Nature’s Wonderbalm after all). It’s a super smooth but thick formula so I love to rub it into my driest areas like my lips, elbows, knees, and tip of my nose, for extra protection from the dry air. It would be great to use in cold weather as well! The travel size is 2 oz and costs $12.50. They also have gift packs that are $40 USD and have 4 different formulas so you can find your favorite.
5. Florés Boticario
Florés Boticario was created by 2 sisters, Ale and Melissa, who love to create and are both absolutely in love with natural elements. They both share a passion for natural beauty (probably brought about by their great grandmother who was a holistic healer in Peru) and wanted to develop a brand that promotes the health and well-being of your skin while also being organic and cruelty-free. It’s a super luxurious, handmade skincare line that only uses high quality ingredients that are healthy for your skin.
Product: The Balm Absolute
I received the Balm Absolute which is just a perfect all-in-one product. It helps replenish dry and chapped areas while also providing a calming feeling which I could really only compare to getting an out-of-this-world facial. The Cupuacu butter is the best thing about this balm. It helps the skin retain moisture while also restoring elasticity. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory which is perfect for those red-eye flights when the skin around your eyes need a little more help than normal. But it also contains so many other amazing ingredients. The pumpkin oil strengthens and nourishes the skin, the rose water is perfect to calm the most sensitive skin, the avocado oil helps with anti-aging, and the Hyaluronic acid keeps your skin healthy and plump. Everything is certified organic and wild harvested.
It’s seriously so amazing for travel. You can use it on any area of your skin from your face to your hands, elbows, knees, anywhere you think needs a little love. I put it on this weekend after spending 2 days on the beach and it helped soothe the areas that got a little too much sun. This would have been a life-saver in Prague when it was so freezing cold my nose was completely dry and red (I’m from Miami and literally helpless in cold weather). When I’m not traveling, I’ve been using this every night on my face and extra on my lips. It goes on so glossy and smooth and makes my skin feel amazing. It’s 0.8 oz and costs $44.00.
**Bonus: Florés Balancing Mist
Florés Boticario also sent me their amazing Florés Balancing Mist to try out as well and it’s become one of my favorite products! It’s the perfect thing to have on you during a long flight. The Florés Balancing Mist makes sure you can conquer your day feeling fresh and looking absolutely amazing by maintaining the vitality of your skin. Ingredients include Sea Kelp and Witch Hazel which are the multitaskers that help by providing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to your skin while also toning it. The Lavender Oil and Rose Water calms your skin. The Geranium and Orange Sweet Oil work to detoxify and balance your skin’s natural oils. And of course, everything is certified organic.
You can use it all day to give yourself a little boost. Something I love to do about an hour before the plane lands is wake up a little and make myself feel normal again. I brush my teeth, wash my face, and then spray the Florés Balancing Mist. It makes me feel like a brand new woman. I’ve been using this every morning as part of my normal skincare routine and have fallen in love with the smell and the results. It wakes you up like nothing else! The travel size is 1 oz and costs $15.00.
So there you have it. My 5 favorite natural carryon moisturizers for air travel (plus a surprise bonus). Use these products and you can kiss dry airplane skin goodbye and show up to a new city looking like you weren’t just traveling for 36 hours. You can be all: #Iwokeuplikethis.
